At Gigable, we believe gigging is the future of work, and analyses of global trends would agree.

In a previous post, we mentioned a report from the McKinsey Global Institute that estimated that 70% of those working in gig and independent contract work in the US and Europe chose to do so for the freedom and flexibility it offered.

The latest Global Report of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, which for the first time reported on the gig and sharing economy, noted how gigging and sharing continue to change the dynamic of work.

People choose gig work because it allows them to fit work around their commitments, or to invest time and energy into projects they are passionate about, whether these are professional or aimed at personal development.

Working independently means being able to pursue what matters.

One of the most interesting points made in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor 2018/19 report is the increasing attractiveness of gig work to early-stage entrepreneurs. Among those surveyed, across 27 countries, who either are early-stage entrepreneurs or expect to start their own business in the next three years, a far higher number of people were involved in the gig economy than were not.

The rise of the gig economy is giving those who want to see their business ideas realised a means of generating necessary income while they work on the ideas which they are truly passionate about, and helping them to realise those ambitions for which they are willing to take risks.

It has always been entrepreneurs and innovators who have shaped how we work, and it is the future entrepreneurs who are shaping the future of how we work.

The flexibility which gigging offers to entrepreneurs means it is in more ways than one really the future of work.
